A letter from Stefan, Jetson’s CEO/Founder
Hi! I’m Stefan, and I have an incurable autoimmune disease. That's usually a great icebreaker at parties.
A few years ago I went and saw this guy, Mark Hyman, to see if I could stop popping 2,000mg of painkillers a day just to function. Sure enough, with Dr Hyman’s guidance, a few dozen tests, several trips across the U.S., hundreds of hours of research and phone calls, and $20,000 later, I felt much better. What the hell? $20,000? 60+ tests? Here we have what you might call a “problem.”
On one hand, people want to be healthier, have more energy, sleep better, and have less pain, while still having the occasional epic slice of pizza. On the other hand, most people would also like to keep $20,000 in their bank accounts.
So, I thought I’d start a company to fix that.
How? Today there are objectively over a billion sites, books, Instagram accounts, and apps telling you how to live better. I counted. There are literally a billion. And in that billion, there are witch doctors, huxters, sincere idiots, and even a few geniuses, all of whom are giving you advice on how to be your best self. It's overwhelming. I don’t know about you, but when I have too many choices, I usually don’t make one.
But let's say you do. Many of these systems prescribe impossible regimens. Personally, I don’t have 6 hours a week to juice, or the discipline to take magic pills four times a day. (Seriously, read Goop’s rules for juicing. I almost threw my computer out the window.)
The B.S. stops here. We're making it simple to get healthy. We're going to give you the most benefit for the least amount of work. Are you going to get the same results as I got spending all that money, time and focus on improving my health? Probably not. Are you going to have more fun spending all that extra money, time and focus on, oh I don’t know, building a hovercraft or taking a vacation? Definitely.
So what's this going to look like?
Out of the gate, we're going to make some products that have had a profound effect on my life, and the lives of many others: a line of common-sense probiotics. These aren’t just any probiotics, however — they’re the world’s first seasonal probiotics. You see, science is moving faster than the government agencies that govern it. I spent hundreds of hours reading studies and talking to scientists to see how probiotics are good for more than pooping. In fact, probiotics are now being studied to help everything from depression to eczema. So I decided to build a line of “proBs” (as we call them) that change according to the season, so your body is ready for beach season and flu season by using scientifically validated strains that have been shown to have effects on things that matter.
Now, I could bore you with pages of content on why your gut health is so important to your overall health, but there are plenty of other people who do that already (hiyo!). Here’s what you need to know: Serious researchers spending serious years of their serious lives agree that if your insides are more bagels than bacteria, you’re going to feel like crap. You can spend your time reading tens of thousands of pages of research that inform our work, or you can pay me to do it for you by buying our products and benefitting from them. Up to you.
Second, we’re cutting out the middleman and delivering FRESH products directly to you. Fresh is super-important for probiotics as the little bugs die over time, and skipping retailers means it costs you less (even though it costs us a ton to make!). We’ve also built a super-simple website where it’s easy to buy (and cancel — if you hate health), and easy to check in on our progress to see how we're making our products better every day.
Last, while we’re starting with proBs, our real goal is helping you focus on a few things that really matter, most of them free or low-cost:
- Eating more plants and less crap
- Drinking water
- Going for walks
That’s it. I hate to disappoint you, but we're not going to be the YouTube guru with nine assistants that tells you how to improve your vision by juicing berries you can only find on the side of a mountain in Peru. That’s going to be our next company.
